WORK LIFE
As
a practicing pediatrician her biggest love was to help foster close
connections and bonding between parents and their children by advocating
for solid parenting skills, adaptability to fit children's unique
styles and intervening early when problems were little. What she
observed as her practiced aged, is that although parents were fairly
good at addressing problems early with their young children, the
teen problems often presented very late in their severity and duration.
Her patients would come in depressed, suicidal, anorexic, violent,
drug or alcohol addicted, promiscuous or even pregnant. She decided
she wanted to help intervene earlier. In 1997 she left her pediatric
practice to found a non-profit, Full Esteem Ahead, whose mission
is: helping parents help kids and one another.
Over the last decade she developed curriculum and relationships
to help grow Full
Esteem Ahead into a thriving organization. FEA provides parents
with effective tools and inspiring ideas with three seminars on
healthy youth, boys and bullying. The study guides, on girls, boys,
and kid's social lives, that Kathy helped lead the development of,
encourage small groups of parents to share their wisdom and network
with one another. Some parent groups have banded together for five
years, looking out for each other's children and continuing the
powerful ongoing networking. The all-day conference on Stop
the Bullying: Addressing Verbal and Relational Aggression
that Kathy helped develop offers tools to schools that foster a
healthy school climate and reduced aggression. Due to Full Esteem
Ahead, hundreds of parents are now more confident in their ability
to guide their children through the tough teen years.
Coaching parents to impact their families at deeper level is the
perfect blend of Kathy's life experiences. She assists her clients,
who are striving to do things differently, to bring balance and
clarity into their lives. And the end result is that adults and
children are connected, whole, caring and fulfilled.
